Narayanganj is an important business hub, but the law and order situation there is far from being satisfactory. We often read about murder, torture and extortion taking place at Narayanganj and turning it into a reign of terror. It is alleged that local leaders of the ruling party are behind crimes in the area and making the lives of people unsafe and insecure. With the sensational seven-murder case Nayaranganj shot into prominence in national and international media. Nayaranganj has an export processing zone with local and foreign investments. Naturally, lawlessness there will discourage further investments from potential investors. The government should control the law and the order situation at Narayanganj with an iron hand. Extortions form medium and small businessmen are reported to be rampant there which was once known as Dundee of the east because of numerous jute mills being located in and around the place. The city has a glorious past and I hope the common people of the area will come forward and save the reputation and image of Narayanganj. Without active participation of the common people the politics of criminals will grow in strength. It is high time for the ruling party and the law-enforcement agencies to curb and eradicate crime so that Narayanganj can regain its old reputation and play an important role in stimulating economic activities of the country.
