Absence of democracy is suffocating and oppressive, the struggle to attain it is painful and dangerous. Current state of affairs in the country is pretty straight forward. There are only two groups: those who have power and those who do not. Aimless and clueless politics has become the order of the day. The whole nation is divided into two hostile camps and stuck like a stationary boat in mid- sea with two sets of people fighting to row in opposite directions with equal ferocity. The situation took a violent turn in recent months as the opposition declared blockade and general strikes which led to several deaths and short-term and long-term destructions. The death toll of violence is rising rapidly. The government, on the other hand, is using excessive force and resorting to persecution of opposition leaders. One day of strike costs us Tk. 2500 millions in the garments sector alone and recent statistics shows a loss of Tk. 45000 millions in last few days. We want the world to know that we are the largest exporter of readymade clothing. Lamentably, and not without reason, the world now look upon us as a country of chaos and disorder. We only see confrontational politics where there is no unity among political parties on issues of national interest. They oppose each other only for the sake of opposition.
Whereas consensus among political parties is a must for development, there is no semblance of understanding among the politicians. Empowerment of people is the most important feature of democracy, but in our country the general people are always oppressed by the politicians or by their activities. After independence we dreamt a country of peace and happiness which has turned into a nightmare now.
