Need for mental health centres in universities

June 17, 2025 00:00:00

Mental well-being is just as crucial as physical health in leading a fulfilling and balanced life. Unfortunately, mental health remains a neglected issue in our society, and university students are not exempt from this reality. The absence of dedicated mental health services in most higher education institutions in Bangladesh has become a matter of grave concern.

University students often face immense academic pressure from regular classes, lab work, and examinations. Added to this are family expectations, financial struggles, housing issues, and personal relationship challenges. These stressors collectively take a toll on their mental health. Many students experience anxiety, panic attacks, depression, and other psychological issues-some of which have tragically led to suicides.

It is not uncommon for students to lose motivation or withdraw from academic responsibilities due to overwhelming stress, which in turn affects their long-term academic and professional prospects. The lack of mental health professionals or counselling services at university health centres only worsens the situation. Those in need are often forced to seek help from private clinics, which many students cannot afford.

In light of this, I urge university authorities to recognise the urgency of this issue and take immediate steps to safeguard students' mental well-being. Establishing on-campus mental health centres with professional counselling services is no longer optional-it is a necessity. Ensuring accessible and affordable mental health support will not only help individual students thrive but also contribute to a healthier and more resilient academic environment.
