New Indian government must address border killing

May 30, 2014 00:00:00

A new government has been formed in India and the people of Bangladesh expect to see that the killing of Bangladeshi citizens by the Border Security Force of India come to a halt. Such border killing is a gross violation of human rights. The erstwhile government in India had shown an indifferent attitude towards border killing and despite widespread criticism the border killing went unabated.

We are hopeful that the incumbent government in India will show respect to human rights. Bangladesh and India share a vast tract of land borders which is around 4,000 kilometres, the fifth longest land border in the world. The new Indian government needs to bring down border killing to zero level which will help further improve relations between the two neighbouring countries. We can choose our friends, but we cannot choose our neighbours; so we better learn to live with peace and mutual respect. The Bangladesh government has to show its diplomatic alacrity and bring this nagging issue into limelight. The government in Bangladesh cannot avoid responsibility for not being able to save their own citizens from being killed.
