The Malaysian government has expressed its interest to recruit 150,000 farm workers from Bangladesh for the development of its agriculture sector. Such big recruitment will create a good opportunity for our youth interested to go abroad and change their fate.
Bangladeshis in Malaysia form a large proportion of Malaysia's foreign labour force and it is a very popular destination for Bangladeshi workers. Both legal and illegal Bangladeshi residents in Malaysia constitute 500,000, roughly one-sixth of all the foreign workers in Malaysia.
On the other hand, it is indeed worrisome that foreign remittance has also plummeted for the first time in the history of Bangladesh which had been always on the rise. Foreign remittance flow has gone down significantly for the first time in Bangladesh since its independence. According to Bangladesh Bank, foreign remittance has decreased by $1 billion. We must take this issue seriously.
We have to explore new foreign markets for our burgeoning young population. Our population can become a rich resource for our country if we use it to our advantage.
