New Zealand PM-elect Key in race to form govt

WELLINGTON, Nov 10 (AFP): New Zealand's prime minister-elect John Key arrived in the capital Wellington Monday with the aim of getting his government sworn in within a week, following his election victory.
Key was due to meet the leaders of two allied conservative parties who will ensure a majority for his centre-right National Party government in parliament.
Celebrations following Saturday's victory over Helen Clark's Labour Party were short-lived, with Key hoping to get his government sworn in by Monday next week so he can attend an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Peru.
But the final vote count is not due to be completed until November 22 and it was not clear Monday whether his government could be sworn in before then. "We've got the situation internationally with the financial position where I think it's important that we are at APEC (November 21-23) if we possibly can be," Key told reporters after arriving at parliament.
