COTABATO, Philippines, Sept 19 (AFP): Nine people were killed Wednesday in an ambush on a veteran Muslim politician's convoy in the southern Philippines, the military said.
A former provincial governor, Nurudin Matalam, his wife and bodyguards were in two vehicles when they were attacked near the town of Cabacan on southern Mindanao island, said local army brigade commander Colonel Pedro Soria.
"The ensuing gunfight left nine dead, including three of Matalam's bodyguards," Soria said.
He said the six slain gunmen wore military fatigues similar to used by separatist rebels.
Matalam and his wife survived the attack, the motive of which was still being determined, Soria said.
