No gas. Why citizens must pay the bill?

January 28, 2024 00:00:00

The residents in most areas of Dhaka including Gendaria, Faridabad, Dholaikhal, Jatrabari, Sutrapur, and even Mohammadpur, Rayerbazar, etc. have long been suffering due to persistent gas crises both in the daytime and at night. Despite the absence of uninterrupted gas service, residents are still required to pay a monthly gas bill of Tk. 1,080 to Titas Gas Company. Additionally, many families are compelled to use cylinder gas or electric heaters and spend extra money for cooking purposes.

Residents of Old Dhaka have been demanding the installation of prepaid gas meters for long. This option seems preferable because, in the absence of a gas supply, there would be no corresponding bill on the meter. Titas Gas Authority asserts that gas shortages are temporary. However, month after month, the city's inhabitants continue to endure the repercussions of gas scarcity in Old Dhaka and surrounding areas.

It is crucial to question the logic behind issuing regular bills when there is no uninterrupted gas supply. Measures should be promptly taken to address the gas crisis or stop taking the monthly bill.
