No stadium in agricultural land

July 20, 2024 00:00:00

A proposed mini stadium is set to be built on agricultural land owned by marginal farmers in Algi Durgapur Uttar Union under Haimchar Upazila of Chandpur District. About 3.19 acres of agricultural land will be occupied. As a result, farmers who make a living by cultivating three crops a year will become landless.

They currently produce various types of crops, including rice, wheat, corn, betel nut, jute, and vegetables. Moreover, farmers manage hay and grass for cattle from this land.

Most of the upazila's land has been lost to river erosion, and the Uttar Algi Union is a densely populated area. This project will have a most adverse effect on people's livelihoods. If the stadium is built, the surrounding agricultural land and houses will be flooded.

Therefore, I urge the Prime Minister to protect agricultural land and postpone the project. I also request the attention of the concerned ministries.
