No to ad hoc-ism in education

January 20, 2021 00:00:00

The auto-promotion of students, especially the ones who passed public examinations, has been an exception and should remain so. The education ministry has taken initiative to legalise such measures through amendment to existing laws. This was necessary although there will be debates on the implications of promotion of all students and assessment of their merits.

However, taking lessons from this pandemic, we should try to develop the curriculum and system of education so that students can be assessed at any point without major examination or test. In a sense, too much focus on public examinations is also not good since a student may not be able to deliver the best in three hours. We now need to focus on creative learning that can make a student independent in thinking and adopting skills.
