'No' to bullying at school

January 19, 2022 00:00:00

Bullying at schools is something which does not draw much attention in our society. However, the problem that often leaves negative impact on children's mental development has for long been prevalent in Bangladesh. According to a report of the UNESCO, around 23 per cent of our school students become victims of bullying at some part of their school life. It affects both children who bully and those who are bullied. Bullying can affect the mental, physical, and emotional health of a person. It can cause severe harm in the form of mental distortion and lead to anxiety, depression, stress problems, and lack of confidence in life.

Bullying is a horrible thing especially among children. And if it is traumatic, it can even steer someone towards suicide. So, it is imperative to address the warning symptoms of bullying. School management should give attention to bullying by creating a positive school climate, better communication relationships between students and teachers, giving rewards to children due to healthy and positive behaviour, and raising awareness through different seminars among students. What is also essential is for the schools to have qualified counsellors who can help students navigate through different challenges, including that of bullying.
