It is indeed alarming to see a sharp and steady increase of extra-judicial killings in our country. It is badly affecting our image abroad. The incidents of extra-judicial killing, nowadays, are the highest of all time. Every day we read or hear about so-called criminals being killed by the law enforcers. It testifies to the fact that the government has failed to establish the rule of law in our country.
A sense of fear has gripped the countrymen and the conscious citizens should not remain silent. Many international human rights bodies have expressed their deep concern over recent spate of extra-judicial killings by security forces. Human Rights Watch also demands that the government should publicly order the law enforcement agencies to ensure safety of all of those taken into custody.
Extra-judicial killing is a medieval method and has no place in a civilised and democratic country. We hope common people and intellectual bodies will put pressure on government so that it is bound to take tough action against errant law enforcers who have become trigger-happy. We must not forget that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
