Nobody should be above law

October 22, 2020 00:00:00

There was a strong opinion and apparent policy stance on ending custodial deaths that create national stigma apart from family tragedy. But Raihan Ahmed's death inside a police outpost reportedly as a result of torture has caused shock and outrage. What is also worrying is that the suspended police officer, Akbar Hossain, has not been arrested as yet.

It's expected that a proper judicial probe into the incident would be carried out and justice would delivered. Already, law has been enacted to prevent custodial death. Over a dozen people died in custody since January, according to Ain O Salish Kendra. This is a matter of serious concern and this can be addressed through police reforms. Law enforcement people should be trained and motivated in a manner that ensures their professionalism. And, the government needs to show its political commitment that nobody is above law.
