On-campus brutality towards fellow students must stop

February 12, 2023 00:00:00

Over the years, many students have been intimidated and tortured by a section of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists. Students staying in dormitories in different colleges and universities are victims of these brutalities, which is unacceptable. The brutality took its extreme form with the murder of the BUET student, Abrar. Though most of the killers were arrested, torture still occurs in various educational institutions. Sadly, these institutions' authorities have failed to stop these illegal, unethical and inhuman practices. Law enforcement agencies also seem helpless about taking any legal action against these activists of the ruling-party student wing.

Attacks on other student organisations have also become a regular practice. It is alleged that the backing of the party in power and their leaders has contributed to making a section of BCL leaders and activities violent. The student organisation once played a decisive role in various national political movements. Unfortunately, that image of the students is gradually eroding due to their role in such brutality. It is the responsibility of the leaders to stop intimidating the fellow students in the name of student politics. Otherwise, the nation will have to dearly in the long run.
