The common people are now frustrated at onion price, because it has gone up a few times higher. Onion used to be sold at the price of 35-40 taka per kg. only a month ago, but now it is being sold at Tk 80 to Tk100 per kg. And one should not be surprised if the price goes up further. Onion is essential for our every day meals, but now the price is going out of reach. People are buying less as they cannot afford to buy at this price. It is good to note that the government has taken initiative to bring down the price through imports.
China, India, USA and Pakistan are the biggest onion producers in the world. Even in our neighbouring country India, an onion crisis is going on and India is importing onion from Afghanistan. We all know, when onion is cut, it brings tears to our eyes. Now when we go to the kitchen market to buy onion, we feel like crying. I sincerely hope that the government will take all possible steps to arrest the upward trend of onion price and ensure that it is not smuggled out of the country. It is reported that a sizeable quantity of onion is smuggled to India. It should be ensured that unscrupulous traders do not get the opportunity to build stocks and push the price further up. I hope the initiative of the government will reduce the price of onion and make it affordable during the coming Eid-ul-Azha.
