Opposition to boycott CAR election body

BANGUI, Sept 5 (AFP): A coalition of oppostion parties in the Central African Republic said it has decided to boycott the country's electoral commission as it considers the body's independence is not guaranteed.
"Expressing our firm determination to participate in the 2010 elections in transparency, we are suspending our participation in the Independent Electoral Commission," the Democratic Opposition Common Front (FCOD) said in a statement.
The group, which unites both moderate and radical opposition groups, has complained that the commission created under a revised electoral code does not guarantee the independence of the commission.
However the country's constitutional court has ruled that disputed clause in the electoral code is in line with the constitution, and the government of President Francois Bozize went ahead last month and formally established the commission.
The electoral commission is the result of a peace forum held in December 2008, which brought together political parties, civil society and rebel groups in a bid to charter a way out of unrest for the deeply poor country.
