Inflation is not good for any economy in the long run. Obviously any news of decline in inflation makes us happy. Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said that the rate was 6.11 per cent in December against 6.21 per cent in the previous month. The rate was 7.35 per cent in June last year, the closing month of the 2013-14 fiscal. Many of our food items are import-based. The declining trend of food prices in the international market has an impact on our inflation rate.
The common people hardly get the advantage of lowered inflation. Again the new pay scale for the government employees will have an impact on current inflation rate. It is a usual phenomenon that every year prices of essentials increase and common people particularly the low income group is affected. We understand that it is not easy for the government to control inflation in a poverty stricken economy as that of ours. At this point, the next budget will be very challenging if it is prepared with emphasis on controlling inflation.
