Parking on footpath

July 18, 2014 00:00:00

As the Eid-ul-Fitr is coming nearer, we are witnessing a nagging traffic jam in Dhaka city. With each passing day, traffic jam will be acuter and severer. A few days back I was passing through Gulshan area and to my utter dismay I found both sides of the footpath were occupied by private cars as they were parked indiscriminately leaving hardly any space either for traffic movement or for the pedestrians to walk. Members of the law enforcing agency were standing helplessly. If it is a situation in the diplomatic zone and posh area like Gulshan, we can easily understand what is going on elsewhere in our city.

After a few more days more people will go out for Eid shopping, then we will see the sufferings of commuters will increase manifold. Most of the shopping malls of the city do not have adequate parking space. The visitors' cars are parked outside haphazardly which totally bog down the traffic movement of the nearby area.  Traffic problem is not new in our city and ahead of any major festival we see the situation goes from bad to worse. I hope illegal parking will be totally eliminated so that traffic movement is not hampered in our city and the citizens can move with some ease and comfort.
