Penalising jay-walking

The drive to impose fines on people found jay-walking, as reported in almost all dailies is indeed heartening!! It seems that this good preventive measure by the police is paying off! I believe that this should be practised in Gulshan also, where driving across Circle 1 & 2 is a nightmare with people running across the road most of the time!

Another measure that can also be adopted simultaneously is to heavily fine the motorcyclists driving on the pavements which are meant for pedestrians! These two measures should be taken and carried out some time. The fine for the motorcyclists should be heavier and if they cannot pay it on the spot, their motorcycles should be seized and a fine of say Tk1000 (one thousand) per day should be imposed as additional cost for retaining the motorcycles by the police authorities in their custody!
