Plight of Bede women

The plight of Bede women deserves urgent attention. Despite being the primary earners in their families, these women often receive little respect within their society and remain neglected by the wider community.
Bede women work tirelessly to support their families through activities such as snake charming, traditional healing, selling household items, and performing various forms of folk entertainment. Yet most of them are deprived of education due to poverty, insecurity, child marriage, and their nomadic lifestyle. As a result, literacy rates among Bede women remain alarmingly low.
Their health condition is equally concerning. Early marriage and childbirth expose them to serious health risks, while inadequate access to healthcare and nutritious food often leads to malnutrition and anemia. Many women suffer from preventable illnesses and complications during pregnancy.
Although some NGOs are working to improve their access to education, healthcare, and vaccinations, much more needs to be done. The government, educational institutions, and civil society should work together to raise awareness about education, health, and women's rights within the Bede community. Talented Bede girls should also be encouraged to participate in cultural and educational activities to build confidence and social inclusion.
Bede women are an integral part of our society. Ensuring their dignity, rights, and opportunities is our collective responsibility.
