Plight of libraries

Dhaka was once famous for its rich libraries. There was hardly any locality that did not have one. The present older part of the city had reasons to take pride in its libraries. Books of subjects ranging from literature, philosophy, culture, science to history and biographies used to enrich these mines of enlightenment.
Nowadays, the younger generation will give a puzzling look on being urged to visit a library. To them, Facebook is of more importance than a library. They while away hour after hour by chatting on the so-called social media, but will not use the Google Search. Many of them even do not know that Internet is a treasure trove of knowledge on all subjects. This is pathetic.
Coming to the print technology and printed books, people in general are becoming averse to this unique world. Over the decades, many libraries have disappeared. Some are gasping for survival with the shelves filled with worn-out books. The compounds of many are used by anti-social elements at night. What a sarcastic development!
