Plunderers and banks\\\' role to uproot them

December 02, 2014 00:00:00

Bangladesh Bank high officials feel complacent about high foreign exchange reserve, school banking, SME loan, agro loan success etc. etc. BB has become members of many international agencies so as to curb money laundering, illegal monetary transaction etc. Anti Corruption Commissioner (ACC) is also pursuing to nab culprits through mutual assistance with many countries where Bangladeshies have assets or bank accounts. Unfortunately, huge amount of money is now default loan amounting to Tk 60,000 crore as per estimates of local banks. The role of BB in curbing such crimes is unclear. The govt of Narendra Modi of India submitted a list of about 600 Indians to Supreme Court of India who have Bank accounts in Switzerland. It is time for BB and others concerned to find out the names of Bangladeshis who have laundered illegal money abroad either as deposits in banks or in the form of assets. In the name of friendship, cooperation, good gesture, there is no harm if we take Indian help in this respect for getting information about hidden wealth of Bangladeshis abroad. We often talk about SME loan but what about Public Limited Companies who raised millions of taka as share capital through sale of shares and debentures. More importantly, several dozens of them are not in existence as published in the media. These PLCs are another form of MLM undertakings cheating the public. Should BB be more active and bring defaulters under law or enact new laws to punish the culprits!
