It was nice to hear Finance Minister AMA Muhith praising his predecessor Saifur Rahman for introducing the VAT system in Bangladesh. Saifur Rahman belonged to the opposition camp led by the BNP. He placed the national budget in parliament 12 times and it is still a record in the history of this country.
Through VAT, the Bangladesh government has been earning a big chunk of revenue and it is helping our economy to a great extent. AMA Muhith has shown our other politicians that if we praise the work of our opposition leaders, we do not become less important; rather it proves that we know how to give respect to those who deserve it.
If we pay respect to the people who deserve it, we too will get respect in return. In our country, there is a bad tradition of not praising our opposition, and it is not helping us create good political atmosphere where respect and honour prevail.
I hope the political leaders of the ruling party and the opposition will learn from AMA Muhith, and follow suit and pay respect to their opposition counterparts. Paying due respect to those deserving should be the mantra of our politicians. They should practise it in their day-to-day life. Only the respected people can pay respect to others.
