Political violence escalates in Lanka, death-toll five

COLOMBO, Jan 19 (AFP): The death toll in political violence ahead of the January 26 presidential elections in Sri Lanka, rose to five with three persons, including two party workers being killed in separate incidents on Monday.
A supporter of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa was killed by an armed group in Madurankuliya area in north western Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, ten supporters of opposition candidate Sarath Fonseka were pasting posters at Wariyapola in north-west, when they came under attack by a gang of seven persons who were motorcycles-borne, DIG Elections Gamini Navaratna said.
Though the supporters ran away, the miscreants who were using clubs, killed one of the supporters, he said.
The victim H M Dhammika Herath (33) was a businessman in the area and a son of the former principal of Amakadawara Vidyalaya, the 'Daily Mirror Online' reported.
The body was to be sent for post-mortem to the Kurunegala teaching hospital and five suspects have been arrested.
