Preparedness for prevention of Mpox

The global alert regarding the spread of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox), particularly in several African countries, serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of vigilance and preparedness in safeguarding public health. With the virus potentially spreading beyond its initial regions, the threat to countries like Bangladesh is real, necessitating immediate and comprehensive preventive measures.
In response, the Ministry of Health in Bangladesh has called for all relevant authorities to be on high alert to prevent the spread of mpox within the country. This proactive stance is not only timely but also essential given the highly infectious nature of the disease. The ministry, in collaboration with airport authorities and health services, has already begun implementing vital measures, such as temperature screening at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and the issuance of guidelines for other points of entry. These steps are crucial to preventing the virus from gaining a foothold in Bangladesh, where, fortunately, no cases have been detected so far.
The focus on public awareness is also a vital component of the government's strategy. The authorities are urging individuals to seek immediate medical attention if they exhibit symptoms or have had contact with an infected person, especially after travelling to affected regions.
Besides, the government must ensure that all points of entry, including airports, land borders, and seaports, are thoroughly equipped with the necessary screening tools. Additionally, health workers across the country must be adequately trained to identify and respond to potential cases, ensuring that any signs of the disease are swiftly addressed. Public information campaigns should be started and intensified to keep the populace informed about the risks and the preventive measures needed.
Furthermore, international collaboration will be a key to the endeavour's success. Engaging with global health organisations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) will allow Bangladesh to stay updated on the latest developments regarding mpox and to adopt the right strategies. Such collaboration also opens the door for support in areas like vaccine distribution, should it become necessary, and in sharing best practices for disease containment.
