Price hike before Ramadan

March 11, 2024 00:00:00

As the Ramadan is approaching, the people are preparing themselves for the holy month as well as to navigate a financial crunch due to additional hike in the prices of essential items.

A significant price hike amidst the ongoing inflation in the country is evident. At the beginning of 2023, the price of poultry chicken was around Tk 140-150 per kg. However, as we entered 2024, its price has jumped by around Tk 80 and even Tk 100 in some places.

Meanwhile, the income of people has increased little to none. If this market condition persists without intervention from the Food Ministry of Bangladesh, inflation will only further burden the general populace. Now that Ramadan is about to begin, officials under the Food Directorate should start preparations for controlling market prices and impose strict penalties on anyone demanding exorbitant prices from consumers.
