Promoting a healthy political environment

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the main opposition party, has garnered a lot of praise from all quarters at home and abroad for discontinuing political programmes like strike and blockade. The common people appreciate the party for its sensible and judicious step. Now, the ruling party should release all the leaders and activities of BNP in jail and stop harassing them.

Leaders of the ruling party should stop making provocative speeches against the opposition parties so that a peaceful atmosphere prevails. The date of fresh election should be settled through earnest negotiation.

No matter how much the ruling party may claim, the one-sided election will not serve the cause of democracy, nor will it help establish the rule of law. The peace-loving people of the country hope that the leaders of the ruling party will reciprocate the positive gesture of the main opposition party to flourish democracy here.
