Protecting youths from cyber threats

In today's Bangladesh, the internet has become an inseparable part of students' lives. It serves as a vast library of knowledge and a gateway to global opportunities. However, this digital landscape also harbours significant dangers that can harm young users. These threats-ranging from data theft and exposure to inappropriate content to cyber-harassment and predatory behaviour-are constantly evolving and becoming more sophisticated.
A primary reason many remain vulnerable online is the lack of "digital literacy." Numerous students are unaware of how to maintain privacy, avoid suspicious interactions with strangers, or identify phishing attempts. This lack of awareness makes them easy targets of malicious actors. Furthermore, the impact of cyberbullying is profound; it can lead to severe anxiety, depression, and a decline in academic performance, creating a toxic environment for young people.
To address these challenges, a multi-stakeholder approach is essential. Educational institutions need to move beyond teaching basic computer skills and begin incorporating comprehensive "cyber ethics" into the curriculum. Students should be taught critical thinking and responsible online behaviour. Parents also play a pivotal role. It is crucial to foster an environment of trust where children feel safe reporting negative online experiences without fear of having their devices confiscated. Open communication remains the best defence against digital threats.
