Protection and safety of animals

October 05, 2020 00:00:00

Recently the Dhaka South City Corporation's decision to eradicate dogs from the streets triggered both appreciation and protest. The protagonists want to see streets free of dogs while the protesters are concerned about whether the dogs will get enough food to survive where they would be shifted.

In our part of the world, we see allegations that animals of zoos are not provided with adequate food. There are reports that animals fell ill and even died due to lack of care. In rural areas, people by and large have a tendency to attack animals, perhaps because of historic trend of fighting them for safety. As a result, in many cases, we could not prove that we are kind to them. Many wild animals and birds are getting extinct in our country.

We just forget animals are a part of the scheme of Nature. Not merely for beauty and diversity, but also for environmental balance, we must protect animals. In 1931, a conference of environmental scientists in Florence, Italy, declared October 4 as the World Animal Day to raise awareness of their rights as animals. The promise of this day is that they have the right to live in safety.
