Protection of voting rights ensures democracy
May 04, 2015 00:00:00
The present election commission has failed to conduct a free and fair election and it should step down and make way for people who are efficient to run this important institution. If we have a strong and impartial election commission like our neighboring country India, then many of our present political problems will be solved. The voters were completely deprived of their voting rights during the recent city elections and they are not definitely pleased with the situation. It is also true that people are not also happy with the politics of violence of the opposition, but they are disgruntled with the way they were robbed of their voting rights.
The United Nations should intervene and ensure a free and fair election taking place in our country under its observation. The Bangladesh army has been maintaining peace in many countries of the world and they are perfectly capable of ensuring peaceful and fair elections. It is high time we made sure the voting rights of the people were duly protected without which we cannot even dream of establishing real democracy in the country.
