Quality of train services

November 03, 2020 00:00:00

Though considered as a safer mode of transport, trains are far from providing quality services to commuters in Bangladesh. There are many affluent passengers, who want to travel by trains, but do not take Bangladesh railway's services due to lack of air-conditioned coaches, good compartments and quality services.

In some cases, non-AC compartments in inter-city trains, packed with standing passengers, make it very difficult for the passengers to sit comfortably. The passengers are sometimes harassed by porters, beggars and vendors. As they have free access to different stations, they are always present on platforms. Then comes the problem of miscreants and drug peddlers. Railway stations and adjoining areas are often considered as safe zones for them.

The government has been implementing many mega infrastructure projects. But, the railway sector has not been able to improve its services. It can be a profitable sector if the standards of train services are upgraded. The railway authorities should focus on the quality of its serves.
