Quitting smoking

April 19, 2021 00:00:00

There is a widely believed perception among many people that smoking cigarettes reduces stress or tension. This is why today's youths are seen smoking in their crisis moments. There is another established view that smoking is a kind of fashion or smartness, and a symbol of nobility. In reality, smoking has no benefits. It cannot reduce any kind of stress. It shows no smartness rather harms the smokers by causing heart attacks, respiratory problems, asthma, pneumonia, bronchitis, and more.

According to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey-2009, 413 million adults in Bangladesh use tobacco, which is 43.3 per cent of our total population. The number of male smokers in the country is 21 million and the number of female smokers is about 700,000. According to the survey, around 11.5 million people are the victims of passive smoking. Smoking alone kills 57,000 people every year and paralyses 372,000. We urge all smokers to quit this bad habit so that we all can lead a healthy and beautiful life.
