The government has allowed stipend for students of PSC and JSC levels. About 55 thousand students appearing at the PSC 2013 examination were selected across the country for talent pool and general category stipends. It is expected that the list of awardees for PSC 2014 and JSC 2014 examinations will be declared soon.
Undoubtedly, it is a commendable venture of the government. But the stipend money is too insignificant in view of the day-to-day expenses of a student. Each talent pool student gets Tk 200 per month whereas each general category stipend achiever gets Tk 150 up to class VIII. Each student also gets an additional amount of Tk150 per annum for purchase of study materials. On the other hand, monthly stipend money is Tk 300 for talent pool and Tk 250 for general category stipend holders for post-JSC students reading up to class X.
Indeed, stipend is a motivating factor for a student. At the same time, the amount of stipend is also important in view of rising cost of living and therefore this amount needs to be enhanced.
Each talent pool stipend holder may be given at least Tk 1,000 and each general category stipend holder an amount of Tk 800 each month at PSC level. Likewise, the amount may be Tk 1,500 and Tk 1,200 per month respectively for JSC level and each stipend achiever should also get additional Tk 1,000 annually to purchase necessary study materials.
I therefore, would like to urge upon the ministers for finance and education to increase the amount of stipends at school levels preferably from the current year.
