Reading books: A habit in decline

May 22, 2015 00:00:00

Reading is a habit which is fast declining. Young people are hardly seen reading books nowadays as they are too busy fiddling with their Smartphones, computer etc. and similar other things. As parents, we should encourage our children to read books so that they can acquire knowledge from the writings of great authors.

Reading actually stimulates our minds and helps us broaden our knowledge. We are living in the age of Facebook and Twitter when people have less patience and are unwilling to read much.

As a matter of fact, when we read books a world of knowledge opens itself before us. Recently, I was reading "Kite Runner" by famous writer Khaled Hossaini, who was born in Kabul and now lives in the USA.

The author simply took me to war-torn Afghanistan with him and the journey was fabulous. I came to know a lot of things about the lives of the Afghan people and it was fascinating. I hope we will read books and encourage our children to cultivate this wonderful habit in their lives.
