The 200-year-old Katakhali canal at Karatia union under Tangail district hardly exists. On the other side of the canal stands Saadat University College. Katakhali canal connects Karatia Bazar, the second biggest cloth market of the country having a turnover of more than a billion taka per month. That says the importance of this market and its connectivity with the canal. This canal used to play a vital role in carrying goods by big boats to the Karatia Bazar. It was also rich in fish resources. All these are story of the past. Some unscrupulous people encroached the canal claiming they own the canal basin. They erected illegal structures there. Following media reports on this illegal encroachment in 2012, the Tangail district administration came forward to recover this public property. This was hailed by local people. Unfortunately after a year, the same encroachers returned and started to grab the canal.
We hope the Tangail district administration will take necessary steps to free this canal from the clutches of the encroachers and give the criminals exemplary punishment.
