It is a piece of good news for us that the US and Chinese Presidents have agreed to curtail greenhouse gas emission. The two countries produce 44 per cent of greenhouse gases of the world and it is quite alarming.
The Kyoto Protocol of 1997 is the pillar of greenhouse gas reduction declaration. Many countries endorsed it and promised to evolve strategy accordingly. But the developed countries had been evasive from the beginning and unfortunately, the US and China were among them.
Fresh air is indispensable for our life and a developing country like Bangladesh, is trying its best to reduce the greenhouse gases, as the country is in a very vulnerable position in respect of climate change according to scientific forecasts.
US President Barack Obama assured that the US would bring down the greenhouse gas emission up to 28 per cent within 2025. China too declared that it would reduce the same significantly within 2030. Undoubtedly, such a move will encourage other developed countries to follow the suit.
We also need to adopt suitable work plan aimed at reducing the greenhouse gases in our country. I feel, the developed countries should first come forward in tackling the issue to save themselves, along with them the rest of the world.
