The law enforcing agency is conducting a drive against unfit vehicles plying on the roads of our capital. Most people extended their support in favour of the drive, although it has led to a sharp decline in the number of public transports in the city. But the fact remains that a large portion of road accidents taking place across the country can be attributed to unfit vehicles. Many unfit vehicle owners are now keeping their vehicles off the road, though temporarily, only to avoid penalty. There is no doubt that as soon as the drive ends, these unfit vehicles will come out on the road again. It has become a cat and mouse game. True, because of such drive against the unfit vehicles we see fewer transports on the road and the commuters are suffering as they are trying to commute from one place to another. The traffic situation of Dhaka is one of the worst in the world and thousands of work hours are lost due to traffic congestion. I think, the traffic authority should often conduct such drives at regular intervals so that the owners of unfit vehicles are compelled to fix their vehicles right or throw them out of use. The government should introduce more state sponsored public buses so that the suffering of the commuters is lessened and they can move with ease and comfort.
