Rehabilitation of drug addicts

July 02, 2023 00:00:00

We do not know the exact number of floating people in Dhaka city. But many of them can be seen on the footpaths inhaling glue-filled plastic bags or taking drugs like cannabis and pethidine. They are taking these drugs publicly even in front of the members of law enforcement agencies. For example, anyone crossing Chankharpool intersection can spot a crowd of drug addicts, who help each other to inject drugs. They do it even in front of the policemen patrolling there. But nobody is coming forward to prevent them from using drug. These floating people also work as carriers of drugs between dealers and buyers.

These drug addicts are mentally and physically healthy. Their clothes are in tatters and their bodies are covered in dirt. Drugs have nearly brought them to the brink. And now, they are wrongly influencing the younger generations by taking drugs in public. These people can come out of this addiction if they are rehabilitated with counselling. The authorities concerned should take measures to introduce a large-scale rehabilitation programme for these people so that they can become useful manpower for the country in the future.
