Reintegration of returnees

February 29, 2020 00:00:00

My attention has been drawn to a Financial Express news item on 'Introduce 'reintegration' loan for returnee migrant workers'. It is encouraging to note that suggestion came from activists for providing returnee migrant workers with facilities including loans to start their life anew. It's only logical that mostly young expatriates who earn valuable foreign exchange for the nation should be given another chance to rebuild their life and contribute directly to the domestic economy. They deserve such opportunities in recognition of their sacrifice.

As recommended, it is hoped that banks and financial institutions (FIs) should come up with reintegration loan scheme for the returnees to help them get involved with income generating activities. Some of the migrants after remitting money from abroad become helpless once they are back home. The reintegration process will also boost the national economy as the returnees gather valuable experience while working in different countries. We also expect that before sending the youth to different countries, they should be provided with adequate skills so that they can earn more from overseas jobs and utilise their experience at home.
