Hospitals are meant for treatment of diseases and people go there for cure of various ailments. Whether they get cured and go back home happily is another story. But getting affected by a fatal disease originating from hospital wastes is indeed tragic, to say the least.
In our country, hospital waste is a major problem as it is any other developing country. The main purpose of any hospital or health care institution is to provide health care services. While visiting health care facilities, patients should not become a victim of diseases carried by hospital wastes.
It is very important to ensure patients' safety by keeping hospitals or clinics clean and tidy. Waste management system in different hospitals of our country is not satisfactory. The waste is disposed like municipal waste in the bins at road side or burnt under open sky. Improper disposal of hospital wastes not only damages the environment but also afflict people with various ailments.
The disposal of hospital wastes and their potential health hazards are an important public health issue. The ministry of health and family welfare should adopt a coordinated policy to manage wastes and make hospitals and health care centres environmentally clean.
