Reopening educational institutions 28-05-2021

May 28, 2021 00:00:00

Educational activities have remained mostly suspended by the Covid-induced closure since March 17 last year. Public examinations were cancelled and academic calendars are in disarray. School students were promoted to the next grade this year without any exams. The government has launched television education for primary and secondary students. Many schools, colleges and universities have also been taking online classes.

However, neither television education nor virtual classes seem to have shown much success, for a number of reasons. Many students have dropped out from their academic life while some of them have become victims of child marriage. A large portion of students, especially those in rural areas, got left out because of the digital divide. The long closure has made some of them get involved in criminal activities. Teenage gang culture has recently started taking root in our urban life. Instead of attending online classes, many of the students now spend time playing violent games like PUBG and Free Fire.

The authorities have reportedly extended the closure of educational institutions till June 12, saying the reopening is subject to the drop in Covid infection rate below 5 per cent and inoculation of university students. Ss everything else is open, educational institutions should resume their in-person activities, maintaining health protocols.
