Restricting C-sections deliveries

October 02, 2022 00:00:00

These days, opting for C-section during childbirth has become commonplace. More and more women are now choosing the surgical procedure without any obvious need for it. And what is more worrying is that the trend of undergoing C-section has increased manifold even in our rural areas. A recent study has found that C-section deliveries have seen an eightfold increase in Bangladesh since 2004. The prevalence of C-Section among our mothers was found to be 3.99 per cent in 2004, which jumped almost eightfold to 33.22 per cent in 2017-18. The World Health Organization (WHO), however, recommends that the C-section rate should not exceed 15 per cent of total birth delivery for any country.

A C-section may sound simple but in reality, the procedure has many risks and complications, which put both the patient and baby at risk. There is also a greater chance of excessive bleeding, blood clots and accidental injuries to surrounding organs. Patients undergoing C-sections, sometimes take up to six weeks to heal satisfactorily. CS deliveries are also four times costlier than normal ones. Despite these facts, the number of such surgeries is increasing day by the day in our country. The government should put in more efforts to address this problem. It is high time to implement effective measures to put restrictions on the rising number of C-section deliveries.
