The city corporations have taken a good decision by restricting rickshaw movement on a number of busy roads. The authorities should also restrict the movement of private cars as they take up a lot of space on the roads and pollute environment while carrying fewer passengers.
For example, India temporarily banned odd and even licence numbered cars on alternate days during a fortnight of 2015, in a bid to improve the air quality there. This scheme had worked wonderfully well. The government can consider the move.
Such a step can be done on a trial basis. If positive results are achieved, then more public buses can be introduced and the step can be implemented for good.
It is high time we made some drastic changes and took steps to reduce traffic congestion and pollution in Dhaka.
