Ridding Gulistan underpass of unauthorised occupants
February 10, 2022 00:00:00
The largest underpass of Bangladesh is located at Bangabandhu Square in the capital's Gulistan area. The underpass was constructed in 1997 so that pedestrians could cross the busy intersection without risking their lives. However, it is now more a market than an underpass. It is more than 20 years since the four-way tunnel with eight entryways were turned into an electronic market. So, pedestrians prefer to stay away from it. The electronic market housed in the underpass has occupied most of the space narrowing the passageway meant for the pedestrians.
Most of the pedestrians, who regularly cross Gulistan intersection or use nearby roads, are not enthusiastic about using the underpass, while many do not even know that there is an underpass. The underpass, in my view, can be a perfect place for the pedestrians if the authorities take action. If escalators are installed in place of stairs, the pedestrians will surely use this underpass. Besides, they should take measures to free the walkways, and let the people know about the benefits of using the underpass. If these are done, more people will use the underpass and thus reduce the crowds of Gulistan. This will eventually relieve traffic congestion of this area.
