Rising incidents of mugging in the city

January 30, 2018 00:00:00

ACCORDING to media reports, incidents of mugging in the capital have risen alarmingly in recent months. The tragic death of a mother at Road No.7 in Dhanmondi at the hands of muggers is still fresh in our minds. Equally horrifying was the death of a mother in Dayaganj area in old Dhaka when muggers from a private car were trying to rob her.

Both the incidents are equally painful and a clear symptom of deteriorating law and order in the city. Mugging is not a new phenomenon for citizens of Dhaka City and it has been equally rampant across the country. It appears that muggers are becoming increasingly desperate. It seems that the muggers are high-profile hoodlums with strong connections. After almost every incident, the law enforcing conduct investigations and most investigations are left inconclusive due to lack of evidence. We honestly feel that the law enforcing agencies should step up their vigilance on the roads so that the muggers do not dare to commit the crime of mugging and rob the pedestrians of their money and other valuables. There is a long running proverb that rightly says prevention is better than cure.
