Rising number of deaths in road accidents

IT is evidently clear from reports in the media on road accidents across the country and casualties thereof that the roads and highways of the country have become death traps for passengers of vehicles as well as pedestrians Last year, more than 300 pedestrians were killed in road accidents and many others were also seriously injured. A study report revealed that 3,412 people were killed and 8,572 injured in 2,998 road accidents in 2016. This is an awe inspiring spectacle for any country. We sincerely wish that all agencies responsible for countrywide communication should pull up their socks and tighten their belts to seal all the gaps in the system and bring down possibilities of accidents to a minimum. At the same time, extensive publicity campaigns should be conducted to make pedestrians aware of their responsibilities as they walk on foot along the roads. A moment of carelessness may turn out to be a matter of lifetime regret.
