Rohingya orphans need protection

January 17, 2018 00:00:00

THE PLIGHT of minority Muslims called Rohingyas from Myanmar On account of ethnic persecution is indescribable. But the tragedy reached greater heights when minor children lost their parents while migrating to Bangladesh as refugees. Nothing can be more tragic than the state of these orphans. They need special protection as they have nobody to look after them. The government should constitute a special committee to take care of these orphaned children.

It was reported recently that there had been an outbreak of Diphtheria in Rohingya camps and a good number of refugees were affected. Medical attention is needed for them and more so for the children orphaned in the process of migration. Apart from the government there are many private organizations to provide medical care for them. In addition, these orphans have none to look after their studies and are likely to go astray in absence of proper care and guidance. They may turn out to be drug addicts, ruffians or anti-social elements. I would like to request the United Nations to undertake an effective plan in this regard in order that these orphans are able to grow up as worthy citizens.
