Save four blinded cats
November 08, 2025 00:00:00
Pet animals play a crucial role in ensuring human well-being, primarily by providing companionship. Pets offer unconditional love and can significantly reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, especially for the elderly and those living alone. However, the qualities that set humans apart from animals - rationality, empathy, consciousness and a sense of social responsibility - should guide our behaviour.
A recent gruesome incident in the Dhanmondi area of the capital is both shoking and sadistic: the eyes of four pet cats were brutally gouged out. This shocking act has drawn sharp condemnation from animal lovers and sensible human beings alike. All four cats, now blinded, are under the care of local pet enthusiasts. The cruelty of this act is unfathomable. Humanity has, in this instance, forfeited its noble values as the unparalleled creation of the Almighty.
I find myself utterly overwhelmed by this shock. My daughter, despite her profound affection for her cat, remains unaware of its gravity and is unable to process the distress. Loving and nurturing pets is increasingly prevalent in society, particularly among pet enthusiasts; however, available care facilities remain inadequate. Moreover, the Animal Welfare Act of 2019 necessitates stronger safeguards to protect these beloved companions.
It is now imperative to provide urgent care for these four blinded cats at the Central Veterinary Hospital, where they can be nurtured and treated. Additionally, if feasible, consideration should be given to the possibility of restoring vision through ophthalmic surgery for any cats whose eyes might be salvaged.
