Scrapping BJMC

March 15, 2018 00:00:00

FINANCE Minister AMA Muhith has recently talked in favour of scrapping Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC). I would like to congratulate the minister for the statement as BJMC had been incurring huge financial losses every year since its inception. UK scraped jute industry from Dundee during the forties of the last century. Pakistan government set up jute industries in the then East Pakistan, that imposed a huge burden on us. We did not realise the matter and poured in billions of Taka every year to compensate loss of the industry. Thousands of employees spent their working life in jute industries, but did not get service benefits or final payment at the end of their service career. I am one of those thousands of victims. I resigned from a jute mills in 1992 realising the dark future ahead. I did not get my final payment of Tk 32,000 as of now. If I failed to resign at that time, my kids would have been on the streets. They would not be in a position to get admitted to private universities and colleges for higher education. Thanks again to the Finance Minister for his realisation and remarks on jute industry.
