Dhaka University Professor of Economics Abu Ahmed wrote appropriately in an article, published in The Financial Express on April 30, that there has been nobody to oversee the Public Health Sector in our country. Here physicians or medical practitioners, also known as 'doctors', enjoy unlimited freedom in using degrees after their names. They don't care wherever they studied. Whatever the certificates they obtained, they are doctors rendering services in the healthcare sector. Technicians of physiotherapists, even, dare use degrees of doctors. This has become possible for those so called doctors and due to the absence of effective monitoring from the healthcare authority. Patients consume excessive medicines boosting the business of doctors, drug companies and hospitals/ clinics. Having taken adulterated food people become sick but having overdoses of medicine people become sicker.
There should have strong regulators, not the 'toothless tiger'. It is, now, imperative to set up the proposed commission, the government has to enact new law. We, completely, agree with Professor Abu Ahmed, under the law, the chairman, commissioner and other officials will be employed. The commission will have power to issue rules, and shall enjoy the semi-judicial power. The public with their complaint, whether against the hospitals or doctors, can come to such commission. The commission will take action according to the complaint against hospitals or doctors the way it seems suitable. The commission will also be able to take any action on a suo moto basis.
The illegal business of the so-called doctors and hospitals should be stopped without further delay.
